Doug Turner is an active instrument rated commercial pilot and currently operates various single and twin engine business aircraft. His pilot experience is extensive, dating back to 1966 and includes a wide range of aircraft from small single engine aircraft through multiengine piston, turboprop and turbojet aircraft. He is a certified flight instructor with multiengine and instrument ratings, and has flown a wide range of business jet aircraft, including the Westwind, LearJet, Hawker-Siddley, Falcon, and Citation Business Jet aircraft. He is type-rated in the Cessna Citation 500/550 series aircraft and has experience as an aircraft systems instructor.
Doug retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2002 after a 30-year career as an air traffic controller and manager. His experience as a controller is unique, having substantial exposure and experience as both a terminal and enroute controller, as well as limited experience in Flight Service duties. Mr. Turner has worked at all levels of complexity in terminal ATC facilities from low density VFR towers up to and including complex high-density Radar Approach Control facilities. In the enroute option he has controller and managerial experience in two different Air Route Traffic Control Centers. He has performed a wide variety of duties in addition to active air traffic control, including traffic management, quality assurance, training, airspace planning and procedures development.
Doug Turner is also an author, writing aviation articles for pilots with a viewpoint of Air Traffic Control and Pilot Operations. Recent articles have been published the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s magazine, AOPA Pilot, and in Flight Levels, a magazine for current and potential owners of Twin Commander aircraft, and Managing the Skies, a journal for Air Traffic Managers.
Doug continues to operate an aviation consulting business from his office near Kansas City, Missouri.
